New York Post: If you like Union Square Cafe, you'll love . . . Market Café.

At first glance, these two spots don't appear to have much in common beyond their relaxed, folksy-sounding names. But both brought New American cooking with an Italian bent to neighborhoods not exactly synonymous with gourmet eats. All right, so the vibe at Market Cafe is really relaxed, but its charming diner-style setting in the shadow of Port Authority only makes dishes like an appetizer of seared sea scallops with creamy mashed potatoes ($9 lunch/$10 dinner) seem all the more tasty.

But Market Cafe, a modernized, civilized Art Deco diner with gleaming Formica tables, cooks up incredible seasonal food. House-made gnocchi in chunky tomato sauce with peas, ham and fresh ricotta is offered as a first course. Paired with a Caesar salad, it’s a meal for two. Desserts are just as homey—and huge. A slice of chocolate cake is in fact a jumbo, multilayered treat that could single-handedly satisfy the sugar cravings for three.
